چکیده
Abstract Occurrences of sentences that are traditionally considered category mistakes, such as ‘The red number is divisible by three’, tend to elicit a sense oddness in assessors. In attempting explain this oddness, existing accounts the philosophical literature commonly claim occurrences associated with defect or phenomenology unique class mistakes. It might be thought recent work experimental psycholinguistics—in particular, recording event-related brain potentials (patterns voltage variation brain)—holds potential shed new light on debate. I review relevant results, before arguing they present advocates mistakes dilemma: either uniqueness claims should rejected, technique question cannot used test manner philosophers hope.

Category Mistakes in M&E∗
A widely accepted account of causation (Lewis, 1973) asserts: (1) If F and E both occur but F would not have occurred unless E had occured, then E causes F . This obviously implies (2) One’s birth causes one’s death. an extremely odd result. But is it a counter-example? Lewis (2000) suggests that the oddness of (2) is due not to obvious falsity but to being “too obvious to be worth mentioning” ...
متن کاملBreakup of electrified jets
Breakup of electrified jets is important in applications as diverse as electrospraying, electroseparations and electrospray mass spectrometry. Breakup of a perfectly conducting, incompressible Newtonian liquid jet surrounded by a passive insulating gas that is stressed by a radial electric field is studied by a temporal analysis. An initially quiescent jet is subjected to axially periodic shape...

Generalizing a method presented in an earlier paper, we express the complex potentials E and Φ of all stationary axisymmetric electrovac spacetimes that correspond to axis data of the form directly associated with the various multipole moments.

متن کاملCapillary waves at soft electrified interfaces
Recent theory of capillary waves along the interface between two immiscible electrolytes is generalized to include the non-linear polarization of the double layer. The theory covers both the effects of the capillary waves on the double layer capacitance, as well as the effect of charging the interface on the amplitudes and spectrum of capillary waves. The theory explains major available experim...
